TV Ratings: Fox's Thrilling World Series Game 6 Dominates Thursday

Ezra Shaw/Getty ImagesGame 6 of the World Series According to nationals, Game 6 of the World Series averaged 21.1 million total viewers and a 6.5 rating in adults 18-49. Notably, the CW's Vampire Diaries was adjusted up to a 1.5 in the demo, and the younger-skewing drama tops NBC's Community (1.4) in addition to Prime Suspect, which was adjusted down to a 1.1. Fox's coverage of what turned out to not be the deciding game of the World Series dominated in the ratings in the later innings as the St. Louis Cardinals forced a Game 7 against the Texas Rangers, scheduled for tonight. PHOTOS: Fall TV Death Pool: Which New Show Will Be Axed? According to preliminary numbers, from 8-11 p.m., the network averaged a healthy 5.8 rating in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic and 19.7 million total viewers. When finals come in later in the day, Fox is likely to hold on to its nightly victory in 18-49 and total viewers. The only broadcast program topping the game at 8 p.m. looks to be CBS' own juggernaut: The Big Bang Theory. CBS placed a distant second on the night with a 3.0 average, with most of its programming dipping going up against baseball. Though The Big Bang Theory (14.3 million, 4.5) outrated the World Series in its time slot, it was still down 12 percent in the demo. Rules of Engagement (10.8 million, 3.4) dipped 6 percent and Person of Interest (11.5 million, 2.6) saw a 4 percent dip. The Mentalist (12.2 million, 2.5) managed to stay steady. PHOTOS: 10 Shows Canceled Faster Than 'The Playboy Club' NBC saw a similiar downturn, with its Halloween specials plunging double digits for series lows. Community (3.5 million, 1.4), down a hefty 18 percent from its last original telecast two weeks ago, and Parks and Recreation (3.9 million, 1.8), sinking 14 percent, both matched franchise lows. Meanwhile The Office (5.5 million, 2.8) hit its lowest Thursday telecast to date, dropping 15 percent. Surprisingly, it was rookie comedy Whitney (4.3 million, 2.1) that rebounded. Prime Suspect (4.1 million, 1.2) continued to rate lower. Unlike CBS and NBC, ABC saw growth across the board. A presentation of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (7.4 million, 2.3) -- in place of the recently axed Charlie's Angels -- performed better than what the net's reboot normally posted in the 8 p.m. time period for the demo. And for Charlie Brown, this year's telecast performed 5 percent better than last year's. Grey's Anatomy (9.8 million, 3.7) and Private Practice (6.6 million, 2.4) both saw slight improvements, going up 3 and 4 percent, respectively. Sports couldn't deter the younger crowd from turning away from the CW's The Vampire Diaries (3.2 million, 1.4). Last night's episode was the drama's most-watched of the season and what's more promising, the series retained its 18-49 performance from last week. Notably (though they belong in two different time slots), Diaries beat Prime Suspect in the demo (1.4 vs. 1.2). The Secret Circle (2.3 million, 1.0) improved in viewership and in 18-49. Fox -- 5.8 CBS -- 3.0 · The Big Bang Theory: 14.3 million, 4.5 · Rules of Engagement: 10.8 million, 3.4 · Person of Interest: 11.5 million, 2.6 · The Mentalist: 12.2 million, 2.5 ABC -- 2.8 · It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown: 7.3 million, 2.3 · Grey's Anatomy: 9.8 million, 3.7 · Private Practice: 6.6 million, 2.4 NBC -- 1.7 · Community: 3.5 million, 1.4 · Parks & Recreation: 3.9 million, 1.8 · The Office: 5.5 million, 2.8 · Whitney: 4.3 million, 2.1 · Prime Suspect: 4.1 million, 1.2 The CW -- 1.2 · The Vampire Diaries: 3.2 million, 1.4 · The Secret Circle: 2.3 million, 1.0 TV Ratings

Dark Knight Rises prologue plays before Mission: Impossible

The marketing bods working on Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol are pretty busy at the moment, with the release of a new poster today and another trailer due later this week.To give them a hand, we should point out that this film is not to be confused with Tom Clancy's Ghost Protocol, which Ubisoft plans to make as part of its new focus on movies.Brad Bird's film opens 16 December on US IMAX screens and five days later in conventional cinemas (it opens Boxing Day in the UK).Why the detailed theatrical information? Well, it seems we're not the only ones who want to help Mission: Impossible's marketing team. It's been confirmed that six-minutes of Dark Knight Rises prologue footage will play before Ghost Protocol in swanky IMAX theatres. We say 'swanky' because the whole thing was still just a rumour until it was revealed that only IMAX venues with high-resolution 70mm screens will be able to show the Batman footage."The six-minute Dark Knight Rises prologue footage will only be shown on the higher resolution 70mm IMAX screens. Not the digital IMAX screens. Locations haven't been confirmed yet, so stay tuned for an update on AMC Theatre locations that will be showing the prologue Dark Knight Rises footage at a 70mm IMAX screen nearest you," said an official statement from US cinema chain AMC.Our prediction: expect to see bumper IMAX ticket sales for Mission Impossible 4 and tickets for peak showings changing hands for a lot of money on eBay!

In Honor of the Fine New Footloose Soundtrack, 5 Great Covers of '80s Movie Anthems

I can’t help that the new Footloose movie’s soundtrack is excellent. Trust me, I resisted, but the new collection of old tunes is a proper tribute to Kenny Loggins’s heyday and a thoroughly modern update. Accordingly, we’re revisiting five other covers of ’80s soundtrack gems. Let’s hear it for these five great cover versions; let’s give them all a hand! Alison Krauss, “9 to 5” The 26-time Grammy winner and kickass Robert Plant collaborator covered Dolly Parton’s 1980 typewriter jam for the tribute album Just Because I’m a Woman: Songs of Dolly Parton. This slowed-down version gets saloon grit on Jane Fonda’s ascot. Franz Ferdinand, “Call Me” The coolest band of the ’00s toasted Blondie’s megahit from American Gigolo with a crunchy rock take. If Richard Gere and Lauren Hutton enjoyed pay-pleasure today, I imagine they’d want this playing in the background. Buffy Sainte Marie, “Up Where We Belong” This schmaltzy Oscar winner (perhaps the most dubious victory ever in the category) originally sung by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes turns into a sweet lullaby when one of the song’s original writers, Buffy Sainte Marie, puts her spin on it. So lovely and earthy and fully inhabited — unlike An Officer and a Gentleman. Patti Smith, “When Doves Cry” When she’s not scooping up National Book Awards or covering Nirvana classics, Patti Smith often takes stabs at other well-known tunes. One of her best renditions is of Prince’s Purple Rain phenomenon “When Doves Cry.” Dig, if you will, the passion! Crystal Bowersox, “I’m Alright” American Idol’s ninth season was a dud, which is most unfortunate because Crystal Bowersox is one of the finest, coolest talents the show has ever known. As a toast to Kenny Loggins during “Songs from the Cinema” week, the blonde busker howled the Caddyshack theme with astonishing resonance. As Ellen Degeneres and Kara DioGuardi correctly note, she ended up improving on the tune altogether. Blake Shelton, “Footloose” For the hell of it, here’s an official cut from the new film. Ah, country videos featuring performances on the back of pick-up trucks. A national pastime. Here, The Voice guru Blake Shelton kicks off his Sunday spurs and trills the tune that makes Kenny Wormald jive and thrust. At least he didn’t have to sing “Let’s Hear it for the Boy” in a Deniece Williams falsetto.

CBS moves 'Gentleman' to Saturdays

CBS will replace struggling Thursday comedy "How To Be a Gentleman" with "Rules of Engagement." As of Oct. 20, the veteran half-hour starring David Spade will trade its Saturday 8 p.m. time slot with rookie "Gentleman," which failed to hang on to its Thursday 8 p.m. lead-in, "Big Bang Theory." "Gentleman" will move to Saturday on Oct. 15. "Gentleman" all but signaled its departure from the plum slot when Thursday's episode sank to 7.8 million total viewers, a precipitous plunge from the 13.6 million who tuned in "Theory." While not the cancellation some may have expected after two woeful ratings performances to date, moving "Gentleman" is the first rejiggering CBS has done to its fall schedule, which has otherwise seen some impressive starts out of "2 Broke Girls" and "Unforgettable." Helmer Craig Maker stated he was happy using the final product and added that after it found the background music, despite the southern setting, he wasn't afraid to combine in the soundtrack. "Using the original, Vital would be a little concerned about mixing a lot of genres, but that switched out great and so i did not visit a reason to alter up with this version," Maker described. Imax to screen 'Mission: Impossible 4' early

'Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol'For the first time ever in the U.S., Imax will get first crack at a major studio tentpole before any other exhib: Paramount's "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" launches in Imax on Dec. 16, before its nationwide release on Dec. 21.Par confirmed the move last week, though Imax made it official on their end Wednesday morning."Ghost Protocol," the fourth installment in the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, is a natural fit for an early Imax bow, since a portion of the film (approximately 30 minutes) was shot with Imax cameras, added to the company's changing focus on fanboy product. What's more, it's known that Par toppers Brad Grey and Rob Moore, as well as "Ghost Protocol" helmer Brad Bird and Tom Cruise, are especially high on the format. "'Mission: Impossible' will be among the highlights of the holiday movie season and we're very happy to share the film with audiences early in Imax," Moore said.Imax CEO Richard Gelfond added: "We believe that the early release of this blockbuster film will help generate extra buzz and incremental revenue for both Imax and the box office overall."The exclusive Imax bow for "Ghost Protocol" acts as a trial run for potential future tentpoles launching early in Imax. "The sequences shot with Imax cameras, coupled with the visionary storytelling of Brad Bird and incredible scope of this film will -- mark my words -- blow audiences away," said Imax prexy Greg Foster. In the past, Imax has launched pics overseas only, most recently with "Cowboys and Aliens." That pic didn't screen domestically in Imax because of the company's prior summer commitments to films like "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2."Up next for Imax is Disney-DreamWorks' "Real Steel" on Oct. 7.
